A non Flex-Fuel Vehicle (FFV) will run on E85 ethanol, but it would not very efficiently. Although ethanol has a unique engine cooling capability, if you mistakenly fill any grade of ethanol over E30, and choose not to drain your tank, we recommend you do not continuously accelerate with Wide Open Throttle (Open Loop operation/"Flooring it"/Kickdown) for extended periods as this may raise engine temperatures in a non-FFV and may cause damage in the long run. If you did fill E85 by mistake, drive normally and fill up with normal petrol or E30 at your next top-up.

 

Your check engine light may illuminate if you filled E85 after a while, as fuel trims and expected carbon emissions are out of range of the standard table of ECU Computer Box values. This is normal in a non-FFV and the light should disappear once you have filled regular petrol or E30 a few times, as the fuel trims and carbon emissions go back to the expected values.

The vehicles listed in the cascade have flex-fuel equivalents in the US, Brazil and Sweden. In theory, driving with E85 in those cars will not cause damage to fuel hoses in your engine, as the components are the same but the vehicle is missing the Ethanol ECU map, and lacks the greater range of bounds found in a Flex-Fuel Vehicle.

Mix ratios provided are recommendations and exact vehicle requirements will vary from vehicle to vehicle. Blends have been tested and are compatible with most petrol engines without modification.
